Abstract: This study aimed to compare the microbiological quality of well and tap water consumed in the village of Fintel Sombe (Diourbel, Senegal). Six water samples were collected, 5 from wells (P1-P5) and 1 from a borehole (R) and analyzed in March 2025 at the Institut de Technologie Alimentaire (ITA). Standard methods of the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR) and WHO guidelines were applied to determine aerobic mesophilic flora, total and thermotolerant coliforms, and fecal streptococci. All samples showed contamination levels far exceeding WHO recommended values. Total coliforms ranged from 500 to 7000 UFC/mL for wells (3 300 UFC/mL for tap water), thermotolerant coliforms from 300 to 3000 UFC/mL, and fecal streptococci from 900 to 69 000 UFC/mL. These results indicate that all water sources analyzed are unsuitable for human consumption without prior treatment. Awareness campaigns and regular microbiological monitoring of water quality are urgently needed in these rural communities.
