Evaluation du niveau de contamination des tomates par les pesticides dans quatre sites maraîchers de la région du centre du Burkina Faso

Abstract:  

Tomatoes are the second most widely grown vegetable crop in Burkina Faso. The destruction of crops by pests leads to the use of pesticides by producers. The aim of this study was to assess pesticide contamination levels in tomatoes grown at four gardening sites in the Centre region of Burkina Faso. Thirty-two samples were collected and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with Diode Array Detector. Seventy-two (72) pesticide residues, divided into 21 chemical families, were detected in the samples. Organophosphates (25%), organochlorines (20%) and carbamates (15%) were the most prevalent families. All samples analyzed were contaminated with at least two pesticide residues. Quantitative analysis showed that all samples contained at least one pesticide at a concentration higher than the Codex Alimentarius maximum residues limits for tomatoes. Emamectin benzoate (100%), dimethoate (94%), and pendimethalin (41%) were the pesticides most frequently found in samples at higher concentrations. The results obtained showed the need for better training of producers on regulations and, in particular, on good practices for pesticide use in order to protect the environment and consumer health.
